Optimisation Technology
In 2000, Balcas invested £15 million in a state-of-the-art Northern American saw mill established at the Company’s Enniskillen head office site. Balcas invested not just capital in the new mill, but time and effort, scanning the world for the new technology which was most appropriate for its log supply.
The new mill has a line speed of up to 120 linear metres a minute, extracting a much higher value from each log and dramatically decreasing the unit cost of production. When the log has been sawn in the primary stage, it is rescanned and re-optimised and processed through a CNC-controlled curve saw where machines guide the saws along the curvature of the log to optimise the highest yield and value.
